MORE ON DEPRENYL FOR DOGS

Jan. 6, 1999 (Based on AP dispatch):

The FDA has approved Pfizer's Anipryl (animal deprenyl, get it?), also known as selegiline, also called eldepryl when prescribed for humans for Parkinson's, as treatment for dogs with cognitive dysfunction. Out of 199 subjects, 69% showed improvement in at least one of the symptoms. Symptoms in older dogs might include confusion, cessation of interaction with people, sleeplessness, pacing, urinary incontinence or loss of house training.

The FDA also approved Clomicalm (clomipramine), made by Novartis Animal Health, for separation anxiety--dogs behaving badly when left alone during the day. (Maybe it would be better to get a second dog?)
