HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB!
A new name, a new cover design and Robert Ettinger celebrates his 88 'h birthday in a few weeks! (December 4t') How appropriate it is to dedicate this issue to Bob, for a lifetime commitment to the Cryonics movement. Without his and Mae's efforts to keep the organization going in the early years, it's doubtful if there would be a Cryonics Institute or Immortalist Society today. So, if you get a chance, pick up a card, or just send him a note, thanking him and wish that his future holds many more birthdays! Just send it to him c/o Cryonics Institute 24355 Sorrentino Ct. Clinton Township, MI 48035.CI PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Yes, the magazine you are looking at was formerly called THE IMMORTALIST The necessary two-thirds majority of voting IS members required to change the name of the Immortalist Society was not achieved. But after very extensive arguing the IS Directors agreed on the magazine namechange. This helps move the focus toward life extension and away from religious issues raised by the word "immortalist". In mid-October we had
a sudden burst of cryopreservation activity: a cat, a human then another cat. All were perfused with vitrification solution. The cats were cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature in the small cooling box and the human was cooled in the large cooling box. For the foreseeable future the small cooling box will remain in our research lab. Dr. Pichugin has agreed to take responsibility for cooling pets in the small cooling box so that he can use the box for his experiments.
The Annual General Meetings of the Cryonics Institute and the Immortalist Society were about as well attended as they were last year. Attending these meetings is the best way to become personally familiar with the facilities and the people of Cl. We welcome our two new Directors: Jordan Sparks and Jack Nixon. Although Robert Ettinger has retired as Director, he cannot retire as founder. His advice will continue to be received with interest and high regard.
CI appealed the IRS ruling against Ci's 501(c)13 (tax-exempt cemetery) application. The IRS responded to the appeal with questions. We answered the questions and the IRS has responded with more questions. We are answering their questions.
As of the end of October, 2006, the Cryonics Institute has 631 Members (plus 4 lost Members), 271 of which have fundingcontracts of which 17 have funding/ contracts with Suspended Animation, Inc. CI has 75 human patients in cryopreservation storage and 46 pets cryopreserved, along with DNA and tissue samples from humans and pets.
Of the 218 Director Election ballots mailed to Voting Members 91 were returned, including one spoiled ballot. Not everyone used all 4 of the votes they were given. Results of the voting were as follows:
C.Ettinger 109
J. Sparks 73
J. Nixon 64
P. Heller 62
B. Fox 30
P. Batista 19
So the Directors elected until 2009 are Connie Ettinger, Jordan Sparks, Jack Nixon and Pat Heller.
The current Cryonics Institute Directors and their terms of office are now shown on the CI website:

Although Robert Ettinger has retired as Director he remains an Advisor and his input will be received with interest and high regard (although none of us always "get our way"). And no matter how much he may retire or want to retire, he will always be the Founder of cryonics and of the Cryonics Institute. So his biography (and that of Andy Zawacki) will remain on the "bio.html" page.
I am incapable of expressing the appreciation that Robert Ettinger deserves for his founding efforts and years of work in building cryonics and in building the Cryonics Institute. So I won't bother trying other than to note that the appreciation deserved is very great and that I am not adequate to the task.
