MEET DENNIS KOWALSKI

I was born in 1968 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I grew up in St. Francis, Wisconsin (a small suburb south of Milwaukee along Lake Michigan). As a child, I was interested in Science Fiction and fishing . As a teen, I played Football and in 1985 I won the Golden Gloves welter weight boxing title. I graduated from High School in 1986 and 1 year later joined the US Marine corps and served in a Recon unit. I spent most of my 4 year enlistment in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii…

I can't say I had it too rough. I went to college for about 2 years at the University of Wisconsin in Waukesha and majored in partying. I was lucky and didn't get into too much trouble. I then got a job with the US Postal Service. I may have learned how to kill in the Marines but the Post Office gave me the motive....Just kidding!

An old girl friend who I had lost through distance became reacquainted with me and we ended up getting married in 1996. We had 3 boys who are Jacob 8, Danny 6, Jimmy 4 and a 3 year old black lab named Daisy. After 12 years at the US Postal Service, I decided I needed a challenge so I got a job with the Milwaukee Fire Dept.

I sacrificed a little but gained the best job in the world...."well maybe not the best" the guy who interviews female job applicants in the porn industry may actually have a better job....but I don’t think my wife would approve.

I am also a Paramedic and get paid a good wage to help people in serious need. What a blessing and a gift? Recently, I’ve been alternating between the busiest fire engine (Engine 30) and busiest med unit (Med 5) in the core of Milwaukee. It’s very bloody and tragic…a true inner city war zone but I have to admit I love the action and trying to inject a little compassion into the chaos.

The truth is… I'm a bit of an adrenalin junky and the Post Office was just too slow for me. None the less, I enjoy my time off with my family that my unique job schedule provides. We spend much of it fishing, hunting, hiking, swimming, traveling and even mushroom picking...I am a member of the Wisconsin Mycological Society. I have settled down a lot since my younger years and am now a family guy. I have been truly blessed not just in my career but with a beautiful wife and family that I love passionately. That is my life.

Besides my job and family, my second love has always been science and science fiction. When I was young I began to ask questions as young minds do about the world. What fascinated me were the deep questions and the unexplained mysteries of science.

Some time ago, I saw a Cryonics story on the Phil Donahue show . "But how?" I asked would they reverse and fix someone who has been frozen??? It was not until I read the 1987 Nov issue of OMNI magazine about nanotechnology and then later (Engines of Creation) by Erik Drexler that I started considering the awesome ramifications and how they applied themselves to cryonics. As a Skeptic, I gave serious consideration to criticisms of both Cryonics and Nanotechnology and have found the criticisms pretty lame which has only strengthened my position.

I decided to join CI and make arrangements not just because I see cryonics as preserving life and health but as kind of time travel to the future and all the possibilities and adventure that that may entail.

How does my family feel about all this??? My wife is supportive of my wishes and is leaning towards cryonics herself. My kids think it’s neat. My father is indifferent and my mother is very against it for all the usual knee jerk reasons. As far as friends go, some are pro-cryonics and others are anti-cryonics. When given the opportunity, I try to advance the concept of cryonics but I am very cautious not to come across as a zealot. I don’t want to come across as a religious freak or Amway salesman and scare people off. I hope science will produce greater advancements sooner rather then later so that decent people like my mother won’t be lost to traditional memes. I personally don’t think Cryonics, evolution, or cosmology are in conflict with God.

Yes…. I believe in God...For the same reason Pascal said mathematically it makes sense to believe...but I am by no means a bible thumper or anything like that. I like to call my faith a wise hedge position. As such, I am optimistic about the future with caution. I believe in the freedom of a self correcting and evolving market. I am also a libertarian as are many Extropians and post humanists and my greatest fears are our loss of freedoms. What a delicate balancing act? Security vs. Freedom. What good is one without the other?

Some day I would like to visit CI’s Facility and even though I don’t have any desire to die any time soon I do look forward to meeting you all in the nano future until then "stay cool"….pun intended!
