THE EBOLA VIRUS OF CRYONICS

In the July-August 2005 Immortalist CI President Ben Best congratulated Jonathan Despres AKA The NanoAging Institute for removing some deceitful and possibly fraudulent solicitations from his web site. This "good behavior" didn’t last long. Now he has raised the wrath of the Cryonet community, his messages carry the headline "Poster’s reputation too low," and the reader is supplied a link, to read the message. The Moderator is considering banning him altogether. He’s recently started a one man campaign to become Alcor’s next President. Despres is a twenty year old unemployed Canadian on Public Assistance who has the ability to build impressive looking web sites,

Jonathan Despres (Jonano) told us how popular his NanoAging.com website is without telling us how many of his site vistiors came thinking they were going to the website of the Gates Foundation, Hughes Medical Foundation, Ellison Medical Foundation, etc.

Unfortunately, I don't think that we have seen the last of Jonathan Despres. He has left this forum and been banned from other venues, but he has shown no inclination to mend his ways. He has an odd psychopathology mixed with a kind of intelligence, deceitfulness andenthusiasm for cryonics (which he thinks will make him rich: "I will monopolize cryonics and will become a billionaire like Bill Gates in 2044") which makes him a great danger to the cryonics community. His Fraudulent "Institute" and his endless solicitations for money on behalf of cryonics-related projects are likely to continue to re-appear in other arenas. He is still only in his mid-20s.

Now that the cryonics community has been "immunized" against the Despres virus, I hope that we can respond quickly with strong anti-bodies every time a re-infection occurs.

Jonano is the Ebola virus of cryonics.

He's a nutcase. He's been doing it for many years, in online nanotechnology circles.

Just ban him already, and be done with it. I really don't need any more "poster reputation too low" (if the damn reputation is too low, why do I need to be reminded of it each time he posts? Yes, those reminders *do* already go into the filter). He should not be able to post to CryoNet. If this means moderating all new subscribers, so be it.

And from Jonathan, (The NanoAging Institute)

The Foresight Institute is asking money why not me ? NanoAging is an Institute like Foresight, I want to be as good/big as Foresight.org They are nice and I want to be as nice as them. I want to build a business not to scam people. If I can donate my money to cryonics organizations I will be happy.

From: Flavonoid@bonbon.net

Subject: Why Foresight Institute and Not Jonano

1) Nanoaging is only a website, not a non-profit organization like Foresight. Jonano must provide proof in the form of official documents if his is not correct.

2) Jonano's website asks people to send money to him, in his own name, at his own mailing address. I would therefore guess that if someone sent him, say, $1,000, he would immediately use it to get the broken car he has elsewhere spoken of, repaired, and either claim it as an "expense" against his non-existent "research organization," or write himself an IOU to pay back the sum out of his next several months' receipts of his welfare checks (which he has also elsewhere spoken of). Either way, no legitimate research organization is likely ever to see a penny of any donation sent to Jonano's home address.

I could be wrong, and Jonano might immediately forward all funds received to a worthy research organization (which he himself obviously does not have). But if that were the case, he would simply name those organizations on his website, to send the money to directly, instead of to him at his home address, now wouldn't he? It would save himself a lot of extra effort. Not to mention, the taxes he might have to pay on the "income" of that money before he forwards it on. Not to mention, he would have to report it as "income" to the welfare department, having possible catastrophic consequences to his monthly dole. Even if he did not report it to them, somebody else might.

Thomas Donaldson worries that banning Jon Despres from CryoNet would violate Freedom of Speech. But Freedom of Speech does not give anyone the right to occupy my living room indefinitely while making a sales pitch or a political campaign.

Ken Wolfe and I are co-moderators of the Cryonics Society of Canada e-mail list http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cryonics societyofcanada/ and we recently took the unprecedented step of banning Jon Despres from the list. E-mail lists are a kind of proprietary community in cyberspace -- a privilege conferred by Yahoo to the moderators and conferred by the moderators to the participants. Because of his misrepresentations and bad judgment we placed postings under Jon's e-mail address under moderation and told him he could remain in the list if he would agree not to use the forum for his dubious solicitations. Instead of agreeing, he posted a message campaigning for Alcor President under another e-mail address. (He also changed e-mail addresses in CryoNet when the first one got a low reputation.)

When I informed Jon Despres that he could obtain glycerol (glycerin) from any pharmacy, that was all he needed to know to think he could start a cryonics organization. He advertised a $5,000 reward for $55,000 Memberships in his bogus CryoQuebec cryonics organization:

Win Money: 5000$ To win 5000$, you need to convince someone to sign up for CryoQuebec, contact us if you are interested. Inform yourself about the product and read our about us page, it will help you. Earn this cash it`s easy!

I shudder to think what might have happened if someone had sent him money or worse: money and a dead relative. Cryonics has already been severely damaged by fiascos.

I thought that Despres might be personally interested in cryonics, but after he posted his anti-cryonics page I have begun to wonder whether his cryonics money-making schemes are what matters most to him. Either his spectacularly poor judgment makes him less able to see the lack of profit potential than a used car salesman or insurance agent -- or he has the patience to wait until 2044 when he will be a monopolist cryonics billionaire.

I’m a liar, I work I sell clothes in trade shows with my mother, I did not want to tell it because it`s not a great job

You don't want to tell because it's not a great job??? You mean, you're embarrassed? Why would you then tell people you're on welfare. Isn't that MORE embarrassing? Your explanations don't sound plausible. It is also interesting that you removed your cryofacturing and cryomouse pages literally minutes after you saw this post come online.

I want a gun and Im ready to pay $200 for it, are you interested? If yes then email me to ..@nanoaging.com

Your history of mental illness makes it unlawful for anyone to sell you a gun. Get back on your meds.

From Jonathan Despres

Because of my disease called Social Anxiety or Social Phobia, I would need a telephonist. I hate to call people over the phone. I would need a telephonist able to do 3 or 4 calls per week. The aim of these calls would be to put in shape my cryonics company.

I dont have money for this job yet, but I could refund you when I get a customer, or if I get an investment. I could also give you some share of the company if your prefer. We could also split the profit in both. Personally I build this company for free. Let me know if you want, I am living in Trois-Rivieres, in Quebec, 1 hour from Montreal

I was just given a link on an email by Steve Bridge. I was shocked to find that my name is listed as a speaker.

I have NOT authorized this, nor will I attend this "Conference" organized by

Jon Despress, nor do I wish to be affiliated in any way with JD or nanoaging in ANY way, shape, or form.

Jon, I know you still monitor cryonet, and I insist you remove my name...and others who have not authorized their names...from your website. You continue to be a menace...the "Ebola virus of cryonics."
