Hi John,
Great magazine. Keep up the good work! Is it possible to put the following letter in the Immortalist?
Store More - Get More Members?
We have just sent off our CI DNA Storage Kits & we thoroughly recommend that other Members use this amazingly cheap service! For a one off charge of $98(about £60 for UK Members) we will have our "young" DNA stored in Liquid Nitrogen possibly for 100's of years.
Have you read about the Blind man whose sight was restored recently using his own Stem Cells? We don't pretend any expertise in understanding these technologies but it's just possible 20 years from now you might be suffering some illness that could be cured using your own "young" DNA. (DNA gets damaged as we get older so it might make sense to "bank" yours now). The other possibility for cryonicists is cloning organs.
We wish CI would actively advertise this service to Non Members! Thousands of Americans (including Film Stars) are already buying their DNA Storage from American storage companies that charge up to $500. Surely CI could benefit from a slice of this business and the attention of possibly thousands of newcomers who would never have considered a Cryonics contract but who might view us in a different light once they do business with us?

In the continuing saga of calorie restriction diet, I enclose an article from THE ECONOMIST. Also enclosed is an Associated Press article about chilling mice.
Fred Ringel
The ECONOMIST piece was rather long and describes how researchers at UCLA, Berkeley attempted to verify under laboratory conditions whether or not Calorie Restriction with Adequate Nutrition (CRAN) does extend life spans.
Working under the theory that cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells, for a cancer to grow efficiently, it needs multiple mutations to accumulate in the DNA of the cell that becomes the tumor’s ancestor. To stop this happening, cells have DNA repair mechanisms. But if a cell divides before the damage is repaired, the chance of a successful repair is significantly reduced. A slower rate of cell division thus results in a slower accumulation of cell mutations.
Using a complicated system of adding heavy water to mice diets, then weighing their DNA, the researchers determined that the rate of division in calorie restricted mice was 37% less than that of the mice that could eat as much as they wanted. This would seem to indicate that CRAN might have an effect in the treatment of cancer. But the article concluded "…………has yet to prove that reduced cell division results in longer life."
The AP article, in a Jacksonville (FL) paper describes research at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Using hydrogen sulfide gas in one experiment, mice, within minutes after breathing the gas became unconscious, their body temperature dropped from 98 degrees to 59. Their respiration slowed from 120 breaths a minute to 10. Their overall metabolic rate dropped by 90%.
Fresh air revived the mice, and testing uncovered no change in behavior of functional ability Hydrogen sulfide, a component in sewer gas is highly toxic, but researchers said they used quantities considered safe.Further research could develop improved methods of treating critically ill people, buying time for surgeons to stop trauma victims hemorrhaging for example. OOPS!
Hi, John!
There are typos in Belgian e-mail addresses. First, there can't be an oLbe domain - is it ol.be or what? Second, crvonics should probably be "cryonics". Canadian address has yahoogrouos instead of groups.
The Japanese e-mail is not underlined.
The Netherlands telephone number is messed up (OCRed?).
This really should have been checked before printing (and it seems that the errors went unnoticed for a long time).
Also, someone from the Russian Transhumanist Movement (may be Alexey from immorta@mail.ru) will contact you soon with the information about the Russian cryonics support group (if we may be called that).
As you may already know, we are quite eager to start a cryonics company in Russia (in cooperation with CI), though we are still at early stages. Expect more news at some point. We probably aren't discussing this in the cryonics mailing lists because of the language barrier (even though most of us do speak English rather well), but perhaps we should.
Best regards,
Danila mailto:danila.medvedev@mail.ru
Today, through the accelerating pace of technological development and scientific understanding, we are entering a whole new stage in the history of the human species.
