OPINIONS RE: PRO'S AND CON'S OF SUSPENDED ANIMATION

Opinions differ regarding the potential use of Suspended Animation. Many CI members have contracted with Suspended Animation, but the majority have not. The President of CI, Ben Best, is an advocate of Suspended Animation use, but most members of CI's board have not contracted with Suspended Animation.

You need to form your own opinion on this issue, based on your own investigation of Suspended Animation. Some of the views of some CI members (none of which are shared by all CI members) are as follows:

Pro's:

Suspended Animation offers a standby team. Members not located in Michigan who do not use Suspended Animation will need to make arrangements for use of a local funeral director, whose services may be fairly limited. Suspended Animation can provide a washout, perfusion and external cooling to members at the location of their death, which can provide significant advantages. Suspended Animation is able to use proprietary solutions provided by 21st Century Medicine.

Con's:

Suspended Animation has in some past cases had difficulties in providing timely perfusion. Suspended Animation has also in past cases had difficulties in providing an adequately trained staff on site. SA staff says that these problems have been solved.

Suspended Animation has had very few cases, and its costs have substantially exceeded its revenues. Its operations have been subsidized significantly since its inception by its founders, and some question whether this business model will continue indefinitely. There is disagreement among CI members as to the advantages of SA's solutions and procedures.
