June 1, 1998: The Cryonics Institute has suspended its twenty eighth human whole body patient, a Pennsylvania cancer victim of middle age.
Hospital cooperation was good. Pronouncement of death was immediate upon cessation of heartbeat, and hospital personnel adminstered heparin and otherwise assisted. The mortuary team was on the premises at time of death, and immediately began cool-down while removing the patient.
Since we had previously had no experience in that immediate locality, we needed to line up a funeral director, and spoke with about a dozen. Of these, about a third were uninterested or over-cautious, another third were willing but a little too "laid back," with the remaining third not only willing but eager to help and to solve potential problems. The one selected was very close to the hospital. Another said he had been interested in cryonics for many years, and begged to be notified if we had another case in that area.
It has been less than three years since the Discovery channel filmed its documentary on cryonics. In that time, the CI patient population has doubled.
