July 10, 1999: Another Feline Patient

The Cryonics Institute has cryopreserved another cat, the pet of a CI member. This brings the CI patient population to six cats, four dogs, and thirty humans, all whole-body.

In the case of pets, CI does not perform the initial preparation, just the storage. Initial preparation can be done locally by a veterinary; CI will supply suggestions and solutions. Pets in some cases have an advantage over humans, in that, if the pet is clearly terminal or has unacceptably low quality of life, the procedure can be done humanely without waiting for natural death.

Prices for pets--a one-time charge, exclusive of  local/veterinary charges and transportation--start at a minimum of $6,500 (for CI members only) and for larger animals will be roughly proportional to the minimum for humans, based on weight.

We haven't had any birds yet, but expect we will eventually. The smartest non-human animal in the world may be the African gray parrot, some of which have been credibly reported to be able to carry on sensible conversations in human languages, as well as to develop emotional attachments. They live much longer than dogs and cats.
