Relax!
Headache, low-back pain, temporomandibular joint pain, and cancer can all be helped by relaxation. But what relaxation techniques do medical specialists recommend?
Here's a simple deep-breathing technique, based on techniques recommended by psychiatrist Karen Syrjala in The Management of Cancer Pain, edited by J.J. Bonica (Philadelphia, Lea & Febiger, 1990). This deep-breathing technique was adapted by Dr. Syrjala from a book you should be able to find in the library--The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook by Davis, Eshelman, and McKay (Oakland, New Harbinger Publications, 1982)
Deep Breathing--Inhale through your nose and count slowly to 4. Try to fill your lungs from the lowest part to the highest part, pushing out your abdomen, then your lower ribs, then your chest as your body fills with air. Hold your breath for 3 seconds Exhale, and try to let air out as you let it in--from lowest to highest parts of your lungs. Repeat for 5 to 10 minutes. If you become lightheaded at any point, alternate 6 regular breaths with 6 deep breaths.
